Do not let a dog sit loose in the cargo bike and do not hold the dog leash in your hand while cycling. Use a suitable short attachment to a low and suitable attachment point in the box, preferably on a well fitting harness. Always check the instructions and maximum load of your cargo bike and mounting system.

Why a normal walk is different

On a moving cargo bike, a sharp bend, bump or sudden stop can throw your dog off balance. A bird, other dog or loud noise can also provoke an unexpected jump. A walking belt in your hand does not provide stable security and can disrupt your steering behavior.

The attachment must prevent your dog from jumping out of the litter box without the leash twisting around its legs or neck. Therefore, choose a short, suitable connection and attach it to a harness.

First check the cargo bike

Not every container has the same mounting points. Use only a firm point that the maker believes is suitable. Babboe advises not to tie up a dog until the cargo bike is stationary and mentions a short leash that is attached to a ring deep in the box. If in doubt, ask the manufacturer of your cargo bike which solution is suitable.

Make sure you have a stable, secure grippery surface. Remove loose items that may shift while driving. Take into account the combined weight of dog, passengers and luggage.

Use a harness and short attachment

A well fitting harness distributes the pressure over a larger part of the body than a collar. The connection must be short enough to prevent jumping, but your dog must be able to sit or lie comfortably.

A regular dog leash can be useful when walking next to the cargo bike and when getting in and out. Do not use it loosely in your hand while cycling.

This is how you build it up slowly

  1. Put the cargo bike in a stable position and let your dog view the box.
  2. Reward calmly getting in and staying seated.
  3. Tighten the harness while the bicycle is stationary.
  4. First walk a short distance next to the bike.
  5. Then cycle a very short, quiet route.
  6. Build up distance and stimuli slowly.

Stop if your dog keeps panting, shaking, ducking or trying to climb out of the box. Not every dog likes a cargo bike.

During every ride

Check the harness, buckle and attachment point before departure. Drive calmly through bends and over speed bumps. Keep your distance from heavy traffic and avoid hard jerks. Protect your dog against bright sun, rain and cold without taking away ventilation.

Never leave your dog unattended in a stationary cargo bike. The bicycle can tip over and a tied dog cannot safely free itself.

What you should not do

Do not attach the line high to a handlebar or loose edge. Do not hold the belt in your hand while cycling. Do not attach the dog to a collar alone or use a length that allows it to jump over the edge.

Don't blindly copy the setup of another cargo bike. An attachment point that is strong on one model may be unsuitable on another model.

Frequently asked questions

Can a dog run loose in the cargo bike?

That is not wise. A bump, bend or stimulus can lead to an unexpected jump. Use a suitable mounting.

Can I hold the dog leash while cycling?

No. This can disrupt your steering behavior and does not provide stable security for your dog.

Do I attach my dog to a collar or harness?

Preferably use a well fitting harness so that force does not only end up around the neck.

How long should the confirmation be?

Short enough to prevent jumping over the edge, but long enough to sit or lie comfortably. Follow the maker's instructions.

What if my dog is afraid of the cargo bike?

Take a step back and practice in a stationary tank. Don't force. Some dogs do not feel comfortable in a cargo bike.
