Do not use a normal dog leash as a car seat belt. Choose a solution that is specifically intended for transporting a dog in the car, such as a suitable car harness with belt attachment, a firmly placed transport crate or a suitable partition. Attach a belt solution to a harness and not to a collar.
Why taking it loose is not a good idea
A loose dog can distract the driver, escape when opening a door or move through the car during hard braking. A short trip to the forest therefore also deserves a permanent place and appropriate confirmation.
According to the ANWB, Dutch law does not prescribe one exact way in which every dog must be secured. However, the driver should not be hindered and safe transport remains important. So don't choose the minimum possible solution, but a system that suits your dog and car.
Three commonly used solutions
Car harness with belt attachment
A special attachment connects the harness to a belt point. Use a well fitting harness intended for automotive use and follow the manufacturer's instructions. A regular walking leash or collar is not designed for this.
Transport bench
A suitable crate can prevent your dog from moving freely through the car. Place and secure the crate according to the manufacturer's instructions. The crate must be large enough for your dog, but not be able to slide freely through the loading space.
Dog guard or barrier
A suitable rack keeps the dog in the loading area. Check that the rack fits the car model and is securely installed. Combine comfort with sufficient ventilation and avoid loose items around the dog.
This is how you get your dog used to it
- First let your dog look quietly into a stationary car.
- Reward calm entry and staying in place.
- Close the fastening without driving immediately.
- Start with a short leisurely ride.
- Build up the duration slowly.
Do not force an anxious dog. In case of persistent stress or motion sickness, a veterinarian can help determine what is wise.
Check before departure
Check that the harness is properly fitted, the attachment is completely closed and the dog cannot reach the driver. Do not place heavy loose items next to the dog. Provide ventilation and never leave a dog alone in a hot car.
A walking belt remains useful when getting in and out. Only attach this when the car is stationary and keep the dog under control before a door or tailgate opens completely.
What you should not do
Do not clip any dog leash around a headrest and do not use a regular leash as an emergency belt. Do not attach a belt piece to a collar. In the event of a sudden stop, the force then ends up on the neck.
Do not let your dog hang its head far out of an open window. Dirt, twigs and sudden movements can cause injury.
Frequently asked questions
Is a dog allowed in the car in the Netherlands?

No. Use a mounting and harness intended for transport in the car.
Do I attach a seat belt to a collar or harness?
A suitable car harness. A collar concentrates the force around the neck.
Is a transport crate always safe?

How do I get my dog used to driving?
Start in a stationary car, reward calm behavior and build up short journeys step by step.
