Can You Use a Handsfree Dog Leash With a Stroller?

You can use a handsfree dog leash while walking with a stroller if your dog already walks calmly and you can keep the leash clear of the wheels. The main advantage is that your hands stay more available for the stroller, but that does not remove the need to stay in control of both your dog and the stroller.

A dedicated handsfree leash is worn on your body. Do not improvise by clipping a leash to the stroller unless the stroller and leash manufacturer specifically say that setup is suitable.

Why can a handsfree leash be useful with a stroller?

Pushing a stroller already uses one or both hands. A handsfree leash can reduce the need to constantly hold a separate handle while still keeping the dog connected to you. This can make everyday walks feel less cluttered, especially when you also need to open a gate, pick something up or adjust the stroller.

If you are new to this setup, first read what a handsfree dog leash is and how to use it.

Crossbody or around your waist with a stroller?

Both can work, but the best choice depends on your body, the stroller and where your dog walks.

Crossbody places the loop diagonally across your torso. This can feel natural if you already prefer carrying the leash higher on your body. Our crossbody dog leash guide explains how that setup works.

Around your waist places the connection lower. Some people prefer that for a compact everyday setup. Read the pros and cons in our guide to a dog leash around your waist.

Whichever option you choose, the leash should not hang where it can reach the stroller wheels or wrap around your legs.

How do you keep the leash away from stroller wheels?

  1. Choose one walking side. Let your dog walk consistently on the side where the leash can stay clear of the stroller.
  2. Adjust the usable length. Too much loose line makes it easier for the leash to drift toward wheels or feet.
  3. Practise without the stroller first. Your dog should already understand the handsfree setup before you add another moving object.
  4. Start somewhere quiet. Avoid a busy route while you are still learning how the dog, leash and stroller move together.
  5. Keep enough space when turning. Tight corners can change the leash angle quickly.
  6. Switch to your hand when needed. In a narrow or crowded section, holding the leash can give you a more direct short-term setup.

Is a handsfree leash with a stroller suitable for a dog that pulls?

It is not the easiest setup when a dog suddenly lunges or pulls strongly. A sudden movement from the dog can make it harder to manage the stroller at the same time. If your dog is still learning to walk on a loose leash, practise that separately before combining the two.

A handsfree leash can make carrying the leash more practical, but it is not an anti-pull solution. Compare the general differences in our handsfree vs regular dog leash guide.

Can you clip the leash directly to the stroller?

We would not treat a stroller as a replacement for wearing the leash on your body. A stroller can roll, turn or tip differently when force is applied to it. Only attach a dog leash directly to a stroller if the manufacturers of the products involved explicitly support that use.

For our handsfree leash, use the intended carrying methods: crossbody, around your waist or in your hand.

Dedicated handsfree leash or re-clipped waterproof leash?

Our dedicated handsfree dog leash is made to be worn crossbody, around your waist or in your hand. Our waterproof adjustable leash can be re-clipped to fixed attachment points, but creating a loop uses part of the total leash length. That is not the same setup as the dedicated handsfree leash.

When should you hold the leash in your hand instead?

Handsfree does not have to mean handsfree for every metre of the walk. Switching to a handheld position can make sense in busy crossings, narrow pavements, around other dogs or whenever you want a shorter and more direct connection for a moment.

Frequently asked questions

Can I attach a dog leash to a stroller?

Only do that if the stroller and leash manufacturers explicitly support it. Wearing a handsfree leash on your body is a different setup and avoids turning the stroller into the leash anchor.

Is crossbody or waist better with a stroller?

There is no single best option. Choose the position that keeps the leash clear of wheels and legs and lets you stay comfortable and in control.

How do I stop the leash getting near the wheels?

Keep your dog on one consistent side, remove unnecessary slack and practise the route slowly before using the setup in busy places.

Can I use a handsfree leash with a puppy and stroller?

Only when the puppy is comfortable with the leash setup and can walk calmly enough for you to manage both. Keep early sessions short and simple.

Is a handsfree leash suitable if my dog pulls hard?

It can be harder to combine strong or sudden pulling with stroller control. Work on loose leash walking separately before relying on the combined setup.

Can I quickly switch from handsfree to holding the leash?

Yes. Our dedicated handsfree leash can also be used in your hand, which is useful when you want a shorter or more direct connection for part of the walk.
