An extra long walk is great, until you realise halfway through that the poop bags are still at home. A simple regular checklist helps you leave the house much more relaxed.
A well fitting harness or collar
Before leaving, check that everything fits properly and that there is no visible damage to clasps, straps or attachment points.
A suitable dog leash
Choose a leash that suits the surroundings. A busy area calls for a different amount of freedom than a quiet route.
Water for the journey
How much water your dog needs depends on temperature, effort, duration and your dog. On longer walks, make sure your dog has access to drinking water.
Poop bags. Better one too many
Bring more than you think you will need. Keeping a poop bag holder attached to your leash makes forgetting them less likely.
Check the weather and route
Heat, cold, rain, surface and distance can all affect whether a route is suitable. Adapt your plan to your dog and do not force a distance simply because it was on the schedule.
After the walk
Check paws and coat for dirt or irritation and give your dog time to rest and drink.
