The best understanding for a French Bulldog and other wide chests.
Standard harnesses do not fit a barrel-shaped chest. Here is what to look for in a harness for your Frenchie, Pug, or Bulldog, and why a collar is not an option.
Why standard harnesses do not fit a French Bulldog.
Brachycephalic dogs (French Bulldogs, Pugs, English Bulldogs, Boxers) have a broad, short chest and a shortened nose. This means two things: they breathe more difficultly than long-snouted breeds, and standard harnesses do not fit around their barrel-shaped chest.
A harness that is too narrow presses on the armpit glands. A harness that is too wide shifts forward and blocks the shoulders. And a collar? That poses a health risk for a brachycephalic breed. Extra pressure on an already shortened trachea is never good.
What do you look for in a harness for a night plates?
A harness for brachycephalic breeds must be wide enough for a barrel-shaped chest, leave the trachea completely free, and not press on the armpits. Our Unboring dog harness meets all three.
Wide chest plate
The chest plate distributes pressure over the breastbone, not the trachea. Important for breeds that already have difficulty breathing.
Adjustable at 4 points
French Bulldogs and Pugs have a unique chest-to-belly ratio. Four adjustable points ensure that the harness fits well in every place.
Softly lined
Short bristles mean more skin contact. Soft lining prevents chafing, especially in warmer weather.
How do you measure a dog with a wide chest?
Meet at the widest point of the chest, just behind the front legs. Most adult French Bulldogs fall into size M, but always check with a measuring tape.
The two-finger rule applies especially to brachycephalic breeds. Two fingers between the harness and the dog, everywhere. Can't do it? Too tight. And this is not only uncomfortable for these breeds, but it also restricts breathing. Check out our size guide for the exact measurements. Combine with our waterproof dog leash and poop bag holder for a complete matching look.
Frequently asked questions.
Did your dog harness fit my French Bulldog?
Yes. Size M fits most adult Frenchies. The harness is adjustable at 4 points and has a wide chest plate that fits perfectly on a barrel-shaped chest. Check our size guide to measure.
Is a collar dangerous for a brachycephalic breed?
In brachycephalic breeds (dogs with shortened noses and tracheas), a collar poses an extra risk. A harness distributes the pressure across the chest and completely avoids the neck.
My Bulldog pants a lot. Does another harness help?
A too tight harness can worsen panting. Check if you can fit two fingers everywhere. Our harness keeps the trachea free and distributes pressure over the chest, which helps with breathing.
