How to measure your dog for a harness
For a dog harness to fit comfortably, you first need an accurate measurement. Use a flexible measuring tape and let your dog stand naturally and relaxed.
How do you measure a dog for a harness?
Measure the chest circumference around the widest part of the ribcage. Let the measuring tape sit against the coat without pulling it tight. Then compare the measurement with the size guide for the specific harness.
Why breed and weight are not enough
Two dogs of the same breed or weight can have different chest measurements and body shapes. Use breed and weight only as extra guidance. The actual measurement of your own dog should remain the starting point.
Step 1. Let your dog stand naturally
Make sure your dog is standing straight rather than twisted, sitting or crouching.
Step 2. Measure the chest circumference
Place a flexible measuring tape around the widest part of the ribcage. Keep the tape flat and close to the body, but do not pull it so tightly that it presses into the chest.
Step 3. Write down the measurement
Note the chest circumference in centimetres and compare it with the current size guide on the product page. Always use the guide for the exact product you want to order.
Step 4. Check the harness on your dog
A size guide helps you choose, but the real check happens once the harness is on. It should stay stable, should not continuously move towards the armpits and your dog should be able to move naturally.
What if my dog is between two sizes?
Look at the exact adjustment range and your dog's body shape instead of automatically choosing the larger size. A harness that is too large can rotate or slide.
Broad chest or compact build
For dogs with a broad chest, including many Staffords, accurate measuring is especially important. Proportions can vary considerably even within one breed, so do not choose based on breed advice alone.

- Looking only at weight
- Measuring over thick clothing
- Pulling the measuring tape extremely tight
- Continuing to use an old measurement after growth or weight changes
