How do you start taking longer walks with your dog?

More kilometres do not automatically make a better walk. If you want to take longer routes, gradually building up is usually much smarter than suddenly going from a short walk around the block to half a day outside.

Start with what your dog is used to

Use your normal walking duration as the starting point and increase it gradually. Age, health, fitness and body type can all influence what is suitable.

Watch your dog, not only your route app

Pace, posture and behaviour tell you more than the number of kilometres on your phone. Stop or shorten the walk when your dog is clearly struggling.

Pay attention to weather and surface

Hot pavement, heat, slippery conditions and rough ground change the strain of a walk. Adjust distance and pace accordingly.

Breaks are part of the walk

A longer walk does not have to be one continuous march. Sniffing, drinking and taking a short rest are all part of it.

When is personal advice a good idea?

For a young dog, an older dog or when there are medical concerns, personal advice from a veterinarian is more appropriate than a general online distance rule.

Do not turn longer walks into a performance. Focus on comfortable gear and keeping the walk enjoyable for both of you.
