Why you shouldn't throw a dog harness in the washing machine
A dog harness has buckles, stitching and a coated inside. Parts not all of which withstand a washing cycle equally well. Hand washing is therefore the recommended method, no matter how dirty the harness is. less chance of damage than when you gamble with a washing machine.
Hand wash dog harness
- Loose dirt first. Tap the harness or brush off dry mud and hair before wetting it.
- Warm water + mild soap. Do not use bleach or aggressive detergent, as this will damage coatings and stitching.
- Gently scrub. An old toothbrush works well for buckles and seams where dirt accumulates.
- Rinse thoroughly. Soap residue actually attracts dirt if you let it sit.
- Pat dry or allow to air dry. Never tumble dry, heat can damage buckles, coating and stitching. A dog harness is not waterproof, but it does dry quickly, so this does not have to take all day.
Places that deserve extra attention
When washing it is easy to miss a few places where dirt is most concentrated accumulates. Pay extra attention to these parts.
- Buckles and adjustment points, where sand and dried mud hide
- The inner lining, which is closest to the coat and gets dirty first
- The attachment point of the leash (the D ring), where saliva and dirt remain after play
- Stitching along the edges, where odors linger the longest
What you should not do
- Do not put it in the washing machine. Our dog harness is only suitable for hand washing.
- Avoid the dryer. Heat is the most common cause of damaged buckles and hardened coating.
- No bleach or aggressive chemical cleaners, which affect both the color and the material.
- Don't assume that what applies to your dog leash or collar also applies to the harness. The leash and collar do not go in the washing machine anyway, but that says nothing about the harness itself, always check per product.
This way you keep your dog harness fresh for longer
Prevention takes less time than washing again and again. Beat loose mud and sand off immediately after the walk, instead of waiting until it is done dried and stuck in the stitching.
