Your puppy has just joined the family and the first walks are coming up. One of the first decisions you'll make: harness or collar? For puppies, the answer is almost always the same — here's why.

Why a harness is safer for a puppy

A puppy is still developing. The neck, windpipe, and spine are fragile, and puppies tend to pull more than they should — they're curious and haven't learned leash manners yet. With a collar, every tug lands directly on the neck. With a puppy harness, that force is spread across the chest and shoulders, which a puppy can handle far better.

When is a collar okay?

A collar with an ID tag is fine to wear at home, so your puppy is always identifiable. For actual walks, we recommend a harness at least until adulthood.

What to look for in a puppy harness

  • Adjustability. Puppies grow fast — choose a harness that grows with them, like the adjustable sizes in our harness collection.
  • Soft, padded edges. Prevents chafing on still-sensitive skin.
  • Lightweight material. A puppy doesn't need to get used to extra weight.

Frequently asked questions

Is a harness bad for my puppy's growth?

No, as long as it fits well and doesn't pinch. Check the fit every few weeks and adjust as needed — our size guide can help.

At what age can my puppy wear a harness?

From around 8 weeks, you can start getting your puppy used to a light harness indoors, before heading outside for walks.

Do I need to switch to a collar once my puppy is grown?

Not necessarily. Many adult dogs wear a harness their whole life — it remains the most comfortable and safest choice for daily walks.
