A dog can back out of a harness when there is enough room for the shoulders and body to slip through as the dog reverses. This is especially important with fearful or easily startled dogs. No standard everyday harness should be described as escape proof unless it is specifically designed and tested for that purpose.
Why can a dog slip out of a harness?
When a dog pulls backwards, twists or makes the body smaller, a loose harness can move towards the head. Body shape, harness design and adjustment all influence how easily this can happen.
Start with the correct size
Measure your dog and use the size chart for the specific harness. A larger size is not automatically safer. Too much room can allow the harness to rotate or shift. Read how to recognise a harness that is too big.
Check the adjustment

Is a Y shaped harness escape proof?

What if your dog is a known escape artist?
Use equipment specifically designed for extra security and suited to your dog's body shape. A backup connection can add another layer of security where appropriate. If panic causes the behaviour, also work on the underlying fear with a qualified reward based professional.
