A dog harness should fit securely without pinching, restricting movement or hanging loose. You should be able to slide your fingers under the straps, but the harness should not rotate heavily or leave enough room for your dog to easily back out.
How tight should a dog harness be?
The goal is a close, stable fit rather than making the harness as tight as possible. Finger checks are useful as a quick guide, but they are not an exact measurement because strap width, padding, coat thickness and dog size all differ.
Where should you check the fit?
Check the straps around the chest and body, the position near the armpits and the front of the harness. The harness should stay clear of the throat and should not repeatedly rub directly through the armpit area.

How do you know if the harness is too loose?
A harness may be too loose if it rotates significantly, slides forward and backward during normal walking or leaves so much space that your dog can start backing out of it.

How do you know if the harness is too tight?
Warning signs include straps digging into the body, restricted movement, persistent rubbing or difficulty fitting your fingers underneath the straps. A harness that is too tight can also move into the armpits in an uncomfortable way.

Should you check the fit while your dog is moving?
Yes. A harness can look correct while your dog is standing still and still shift once they start walking. Watch the shoulders, front legs and strap position during a short walk. The harness should remain reasonably stable without visibly changing your dog's normal movement.
How often should you adjust a dog harness?
Recheck after growth, weight changes, coat changes and whenever the harness starts sitting differently. Puppies need more frequent checks because their measurements can change quickly.

What is the simplest fit check?
Secure, stable and free to move. The harness should not pinch, rub continuously or slide around the body. If you are unsure, measure again and compare your dog's measurements with the size range for the specific harness.
