Retractable leashes are popular, but dog trainers and vets advise against them. The principle is simple: your dog pulls, the line extends, your dog gets more space. Result: your dog learns that pulling is rewarded.
But the problem is bigger than just pulling behaviour. Retractable leashes are dangerous. The thin line can cut into your fingers when your dog suddenly pulls. The braking mechanism can fail. And you have virtually no control when your dog runs towards another dog, a cyclist, or the road.

They reward pulling
Every time your dog pulls, they get more space. That's the opposite of what you want to teach. With a fixed 150 cm leash, your dog learns that the space is constant.
No control in emergencies
5-8 metres of line between you and your dog. If something happens — a car, another dog — you're too late. With a fixed leash, you have direct control.
Burns and cuts
The thin nylon line can cause deep cuts in your hands during a sudden sprint. There are even known cases of amputated fingers.
What do you use instead of aretractable leash?
A fixed 150 cm dog leash gives your dog enough room to sniff, but you enough control to steer. Combine it with a front-clip harness for the best result.
