Walking your dog:5 tipsfor a better walk.
A good walk starts with the right gear and the right mindset. Here we share tips for a more fun, safer, and more relaxed walk with your dog.
How do youwalk your dogthe right way?
Walking is the highlight of the day for your dog. It's not just exercise — it's mental stimulation, socialisation, and spending time together. A good walk starts with the right gear and the right mindset.
The most important thing: let your dog sniff. Sniffing is for dogs what scrolling is for humans — it's how they process the world. Give them that time. A 30-minute walk with lots of sniffing is better than an hour of non-stop walking.
What do you need towalk your dog?
The three essentials: a well-fitting dog harness (or collar), a sturdy dog leash, and poop bags. We recommend a harness over a collar — it's safer for the neck and gives you more control.
Harness over collar
A harness distributes pressure across the chest. Especially for dogs that pull or lunge suddenly, that's safer than a collar. Check our size guide for the right fit.
Fixed leash, no retractable
A fixed 150 cm leash gives enough space but also control. A retractable leash teaches your dog that pulling is rewarded with more space.
Waterproof preferred
In the Netherlands it rains a lot. A waterproof leash and collar don't smell after wet walks. Makes a huge difference.
5 tips for a betterwalkwith your dog.
Tip 1: Vary your routes. The same loop every day is boring — for you and your dog. Tip 2: Let your dog sniff. It's mental stimulation. Tip 3: Bring water in warm weather. Tip 4: Don't walk right after eating — wait at least an hour.
Tip 5: Make it fun. Bring a snack, play a short game along the way, and reward good behaviour. A walk should be the best part of the day, not a chore.

How long should I walk my dog?
That depends on the breed, age, and condition. As a rule of thumb: at least 30 minutes per walk, twice a day. Active breeds like Border Collies and Labradoodles need more.
Does my dog always need to be on a leash?
In the Netherlands, most municipalities require dogs to be on a leash unless you're in a designated off-leash area. Check your local regulations.
My dog pulls a lot on the leash. What can I do?

What's better: a harness or a collar?
For walking we recommend a harness — it distributes pressure across the chest and is safer for the neck. A collar is fine for an ID tag. Read our comparison: harness or collar?
